What Is Coal Based GAC?

Coal based granular activated carbon starts as carefully graded anthracite or bituminous coal. The raw coal is first carbonized, then activated with steam at above 900 °C, which burns open an internal network of micro- and mesopores. Finally the activated material is crushed and sieved into irregular granules — this "crushed" form keeps the natural pore structure intact rather than re-forming it, which is one reason coal GAC delivers strong adsorption per unit cost.

Compared with coconut shell carbon, coal based GAC offers a higher share of mesopores (2–50 nm), so it handles larger organic molecules — humic substances, surfactants, solvents — especially well. Compared with pelletized carbon, the irregular granule shape gives a higher external surface area and faster film diffusion in liquid-phase columns. That combination is why it remains the default choice for municipal water works, wastewater tertiary polishing, and low-concentration gas adsorption worldwide.

  • High mesopore content, suited for bulky organic contaminants
  • Irregular grain geometry accelerates mass transfer in column systems
  • Competitive cost‑performance ratio for large water treatment projects
  • Resistant to abrasion under typical water service backwash cycles
  • Versatile for potable water, tertiary wastewater and vapour adsorption

Choosing the Right Mesh Size

Particle size is a trade-off between hydraulics and kinetics: coarser granules give lower pressure drop and resist backwash attrition, while finer granules expose more surface and adsorb faster.

4×8 Mesh

Large granules for high-flow, shallow-bed duty — protecting downstream ion-exchange resin, desulfurization beds, and pretreatment filters.

Mailles 8×30
LES PLUS UTILISÉS

The industry workhorse for municipal and industrial water columns — balanced pressure drop, backwash stability, and organic removal.

Mailles 12 × 40

Finer grade for potable polishing, dechlorination, and point-of-entry systems where contact time is limited.

20×50 Mesh

Fine granules for high-efficiency liquid polishing and specialized decolorization; also popular in gold CIL/CIP circuits.

8×16 Mesh

Preferred for gas-phase beds and solvent recovery where low pressure drop over deep beds matters most.

Custom Sizing

Any intermediate cut, iodine value, or acid-washed / impregnated grade can be produced to order.

Coal GAC Application

Eau potable

Removes residual chlorine, taste, odor, TOC and disinfection by-product precursors in municipal plants and POE systems.

Traitement de finition des eaux usées

Tertiary COD and color reduction, cyanide and heavy-metal scavenging before discharge or reuse.

Air & VOC Control

Low-concentration exhaust polishing, odor abatement, and biogas / landfill gas H₂S cleanup in fixed beds.

Récupération des solvants

Adsorption and recovery of benzene, toluene, ketones and other organic vapors from process streams.

Gold Extraction

High-hardness granules resist attrition in CIP / CIL / CIC circuits, keeping gold-loaded carbon losses low.

Process & Food

Decolorization and purification of syrups, chemicals, and process water; acid-washed grades for sensitive duty.

Foire aux questions

How does coal based GAC differ from coconut shell GAC?

Coal GAC carries more mesopores, so it adsorbs larger molecules such as humics and solvents more effectively, and it typically costs 30–50% less. Coconut GAC is harder and more microporous, which suits drinking water polishing and precious-metal duty. Many plants run a coal bed first and a coconut bed second.

Can the carbon be regenerated?

Yes. Coal granular carbon tolerates multiple thermal reactivation cycles with moderate capacity loss, which makes it attractive for high-volume municipal beds. We can advise on expected cycle life based on your loading data.

Quels sont la quantité minimale de commande (MOQ) et le délai de livraison ?

Standard grades start from 1 ton for trial orders. Stocked mesh sizes ship in 7–10 days; custom iodine or washed grades usually take 15–20 days. Free samples are available for lab verification before purchase.

Do you offer acid-washed or impregnated grades?

Yes. Acid washing lowers ash below 5% and neutralizes pH for food and potable applications. Impregnation with KOH, KI or sulfur tailors the carbon for H₂S, mercury and other specific gas targets.
