Carbón activado para la purificación de aminas
Guard-bed carbon engineered for MDEA, DEA and MEA solvent loops in gas sweetening and refinery units. It targets the dissolved organic contaminants your mechanical filters can never catch — hydrocarbons, surfactants and degradation products — so your solvent keeps absorbing acid gas instead of foaming over the absorber.

What is Amine Purificaiton Carbon
Amine purification carbon is a specially selected granular activated carbon designed for side-stream filtration in amine gas treating loops (MDEA, DEA, MEA). An amine circuit gradually accumulates soluble contaminants that standard mechanical filters cannot capture: heavy hydrocarbons, compressor lube oil, oxidative degradation by‑products, and surface‑active agents. These dissolved impurities lower the solution surface tension and trigger persistent foaming inside the absorber.
Foaming breaks down gas‑liquid mass transfer, causes H₂S and CO₂ slip, increases amine carry‑over to the regenerator, raises reboiler energy load, and pushes up antifoam consumption. This amine‑grade carbon adsorbs those foaming precursors directly from the circulating solvent.
- Adsorbs oil, hydrocarbons and surfactant foam precursors
- Stops amine absorber foaming
- Lowers amine carry‑over and antifoam usage
- Improves H₂S / CO₂ capture efficiency
- Reduces amine solvent replacement frequency
Four Removed Contaminants
Hydrocarbons & Oils
Aromatics, condensate and compressor lube oil carried in with the feed gas. Non-polar and strongly adsorbed — this is the single biggest driver of foaming tendency.
Surfactants
Trace detergents, corrosion inhibitor residues and upstream treating chemicals that stabilise foam films at the gas-liquid interface.
Degradation Products
Organic acids (formate, acetate, oxalate, glycolate) from oxidative degradation, plus high-molecular-weight species such as piperazine and imidazolinone from thermal degradation.
Colour Bodies
Oxidation turns solvent dark yellow to black. Carbon restores appearance, which is a useful visual early-warning indicator of overall solvent health.

MDEA and DEA Difference
MDEA Systems
Tertiary amine chemistry is comparatively stable, so degradation is slower. The dominant problem is physical contamination: aromatic hydrocarbons and asphaltenes entering with the raw gas. The fix is upstream solids removal followed by a mesopore-rich coal-based carbon that can hold bulky hydrocarbon molecules.
Recommended grade: coal-based granular, 8×30 mesh
MEA / DEA Systems
Primary and secondary amines degrade faster and generate a heavier load of small organic acid degradation products, alongside the usual hydrocarbons. Here a blended or coconut-shell grade with well-developed micropores adds value for the small-molecule fraction, while a coal component still handles oils and surfactants.
Recommended grade: coal or blended granular with tuned pore distribution

Preguntas frecuentes
Will carbon alone stop my amine from foaming?
Carbon removes the organic drivers — hydrocarbons, surfactants and degradation products — which is what most foaming incidents trace back to. But if your problem is inorganic heat-stable salt build-up, high suspended solids, or a mechanical issue in the absorber, carbon is only part of the answer. Start with a solvent analysis; we will tell you honestly what carbon can and cannot fix.
Coal or coconut carbon for amine service?
Coal-based carbon is the standard choice because its mesopore structure adsorbs large molecules — heavy hydrocarbons, lube oil, surfactants — which are the main foaming culprits. Coconut carbon's micropores are better at small organic acid degradation products. In MEA/DEA loops with both problems, a blended or specifically tuned pore distribution often outperforms either extreme.
How do I know when the bed is spent?
Watch the solvent, not the calendar: rising foam tendency, darkening colour, falling surface tension, increasing antifoam demand and creeping absorber ΔP are the practical early indicators. Lab analysis of the solvent for hydrocarbons and organic acids confirms whether the bed has broken through.
Can the spent carbon be reactivated?
Granular carbon from amine service can be thermally reactivated where volumes justify it, provided the adsorbed load does not contain problematic inorganics. High hardness and low attrition directly determine how many cycles the media survives, which is why we hold ≥95% hardness for this duty.
